The Gift - French Modernist Nativity

A striking French modernist interpretation of the Nativity, with Mary and the Christ child seated at left as three figures gather closely around them. Rather than a sweetly rendered traditional scene, the artist reduces the figures to bold shapes, shadowed faces and expressive passages of color, giving the familiar subject an unusually moody, almost mysterious presence.

The palette is incredible: Mary's deep cobalt blue against glowing ochre, rust, crimson and burnt orange, with flashes of turquoise and luminous yellow breaking through the dark background. Thick, gestural brushwork and scraped areas of paint create a wonderfully textured surface, while the simplified figures give the composition an almost stained-glass quality.
