The Spread - French Market Still Life with Melon & Pottery

This one feels like a trip to the market brought home and arranged on the kitchen table. A wonderfully abundant French still life featuring a halved melon, tomatoes, garlic, lemon, cauliflower, and leafy greens tucked among an ochre pottery pitcher, little bowl, and an oversized decorated platter.

The details are especially charming: the patterned faïence-style platter peeking out from behind the produce, the warm glazed pitcher, the tiny cloves of garlic scattered across the table, and that fantastic melon cut open right at the center. The muted ochres, tomato reds, olive greens, cream, and dusty blue give the painting a beautifully aged, distinctly French country palette without feeling overly sweet.

Signed at the lower right, though the artist's name is difficult to decipher.
