Description
A striking late 19th-century French still life by Joseph de Ruysscher (1840–1905), featuring a freshly caught fish laid across a tabletop alongside a dark copper vessel and dish of warm red-orange shellfish. The silvery body of the fish emerges dramatically from the nearly black background, with flashes of gold, coral, and copper bringing warmth and depth to the moody composition.
De Ruysscher was a French painter active in the late 19th century, particularly known for his atmospheric woodland scenes and paintings of the Forest of Fontainebleau. His work continues to appear at European auction, including a signed 1892 Sous bois à Fontainebleau recently estimated at €2,000–€3,000 by Millon, while another work sold at Dorotheum for €3,823.
