A wonderfully moody little French still life featuring a tall, leafy plant tucked into a warm terracotta pot. The composition is beautifully simple: sculptural leaves rise dramatically against a smoky blue-gray ground, while the tiny rust-colored vessel gives the whole painting just enough warmth.

The palette is what makes this one for me. Deep almost-black greens are edged with flashes of chartreuse and mustard, contrasted against dusty blue and burnt orange. The strong vertical composition and simplified shapes give it a distinctly modern feel, while the beautifully aged artist board keeps all the charm of an old French studio piece.

The reverse is almost as fun as the front, with a collection of little ink and pencil sketches—figures, geometric forms and other artist's doodles—offering a glimpse into the working life of whoever painted it.
